GB and GiB are different units. A drive’s advertised capacity in decimal TB can show as a smaller number when counted in binary TiB or GiB.

HOW IT WORKS

GB and GiB count bytes differently

Decimal units use powers of 1,000. Binary units use powers of 1,024.

1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes

That means 1 TB is exactly 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, or about 931.32 GiB. The storage has not disappeared. The two labels count the same bytes with different unit sizes.

Drive makers usually advertise decimal capacity, such as TB. Some operating systems display a binary-sized value while labeling it GB, which can make the reported number look smaller. The exact display depends on the operating system and its labels.

QUESTIONS

Storage conversion FAQ

How many GiB are in 1 TB?

1 TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Dividing by 1,073,741,824 bytes per GiB gives about 931.32 GiB.

Why does a 1 TB drive show less than 1 TB?

Manufacturers generally use decimal TB, where 1 TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Some systems count those bytes in binary units, so the result is about 931.32 GiB. Some systems label that binary value as GB.

What is the difference between GB and GiB?

GB is decimal and equals 1,000,000,000 bytes. GiB is binary and equals 1,073,741,824 bytes. A GiB is about 7.37% larger than a GB.

Are MB and MiB different too?

Yes. 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes, while 1 MiB is 1,048,576 bytes. The same decimal versus binary distinction applies at each scale.

Does formatting a drive remove the missing capacity?

No. Formatting uses some space for file-system structures, but the main difference between advertised TB and a smaller binary reading comes from how the units are counted.
