Bits vs bytes
Internet plans are usually advertised in megabits per second (Mbps). Steam, browsers and download managers may show megabytes per second (MB/s). There are 8 bits in a byte, so 100 Mbps has a theoretical maximum of about 12.5 MB/s.
Why the real time can be longer
The best-case result assumes the full entered speed is available for the entire download. The typical estimate applies the efficiency setting you chose, so it is a more practical planning number without pretending every connection behaves the same way.
What can slow a download down?
Distance, walls, interference and signal quality can reduce throughput.
The service sending the file may not deliver data as fast as your connection allows.
Your available bandwidth can change during busy periods.

How do I calculate download time?
Convert the file size and connection speed to compatible units, then divide the total amount of data by the transfer rate. OmiDeck handles the unit conversion automatically.
Why is 100 Mbps only about 12.5 MB/s?
Mbps measures megabits per second while MB/s measures megabytes per second. One byte contains 8 bits, so 100 Mbps divided by 8 equals 12.5 MB/s before real-world losses.
How long does it take to download 100 GB?
It depends on your connection. At a constant 100 Mbps, the theoretical time is about 2 hours 13 minutes. A real download may take longer, which is why the calculator also shows an efficiency-adjusted estimate.
Why is my download slower than my internet speed?
Your advertised connection speed is not a guarantee that every server can deliver data at that rate. Wi-Fi conditions, congestion, server limits and other traffic can all reduce the speed you actually see.
Does Wi-Fi affect download time?
It can. A weak or congested Wi-Fi connection may deliver less throughput than Ethernet or a strong nearby Wi-Fi connection.
